Specific contribution of neurons from the Dbx1 lineage to the piriform cortex

Abstract The piriform cortex (PC) is a major cortical processing center for the sense of smell that receives direct inputs from olfactory bulb. In mice, PC consists three neuronal layers, which are populated by cells with distinct developmental origins. One origin neurons pool Dbx1-expressing neural progenitors located in ventral pallium at pallial-subpallial boundary. Since precise mechanisms neuron development largely unknown, we sought to define distribution, timing neurogenesis, morphology and projection patterns Dbx1 lineage. We found Dbx1-lineage preferentially distributed layer 2 enriched portion PC. Further, early-born contribute most subtypes Our data also revealed an enrichment anterior project orbitofrontal cortex. These findings suggest specific association between their properties.
